Emotional Eating Test

The Binge Eating Scale (BES; Gormally et al., 1982) includes 16 scales that measure basic behavioral symptoms (e.g., eating quickly, consuming large amounts of food) and emotional/cognitive symptoms (e.g., guilt, feeling out of control, or inability to stop eating) that precede or follow an episode of binge eating.

Each scale contains 3 to 4 statements with weighted response options that reflect a range of severity for each characteristic being measured. Participants are asked to select the statement that best describes their experience.

The total possible scores on the scale range from 0 to 47, with higher scores indicating more severe binge eating symptoms. Individuals can be categorized into three groups as defined by established binge eating scores (Marcus, Wing, & Lamparski, 1985):No or minimal binge eating (score ≤ 17), Mild to moderate binge eating (score 18-26) Severe binge eating (score ≥ 27).
